We are currently growing our pool of BestStart Relievers at our centre in Alexandra – First Steps Matau
Relieving for BestStart is physically demanding but very rewarding. You’ll need a genuine enjoyment for working with and caring for Under Fives and a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children. You maybe already qualified but may still be in-training to become an ECE teacher, you may be Primary trained and looking to work with younger children or you could be untrained and have some childcare experience. You’ll need to be energetic, friendly, outgoing and approachable with a high level of initiative. Relieving is casual, on-call work so hours per week cannot be guaranteed, and the minimum shift is 3 hours per day. You must be available to work at least 3 days per week for a period of at least 3 months.
Relieving is a great way to gain practical experience in a busy ECE setting, to work with some fantastic experienced and qualified professionals and if you’re in-training you can work around your study schedule. An ability to take direction from others is essential. You’ll also need to have experience working with children or in a preschool setting, flexibility with hours/days per week, reliable transport and be able to work at short notice.
First Steps Matau Street childcare in Alexandra, believes in providing a programme and environment where children grow and learn in an unhurried, respectful way. Teachers provide encouragement, warmth and acceptance of each child’s special skills, talents and interests.
We’re located in sunny Alexandra, in the heart of the community. Our beautiful environment has well established trees to nurture any outdoor enthusiast.
We offer education and care for 3 month – 5 year olds, with two separate learning spaces – Hihi (2yrs and younger) and Tui (2-5yrs). Although we have separate areas, we often spend a lot of the day together. Children are invited to share and inform us where their learning desires them to move.
Here at First Steps Matau we also work alongside the teaching philosophy of RIE/Pikler where we aim to foster and support their world of respect and trust into our everyday interactions.
We have created a unique, special place – our Nurture Nest (sleep room) – which provides a calm respectful place for children to rest.
